Preparation for Class

Students working remotely need to have Maya installed on their computer. In order to prepare for class moving online, everyone will need access to Maya 2020. You can download a Student Version of Maya 2020 (along with the plugins needed) from Autodesk. Please go to https://www.autodesk.com/education/free-software/featured to find free downloads of Autodesk Maya 2020.2 with all the Arnold and dynamics plug-ins that come with it.

Be sure to check the system requirements for running Maya! If you do not have access to a computer that will support Maya, please let me know as soon as you can.

Dartmouth and the CS Department can loan you a laptop and three button mouse for use during class. Check your computers NOW so we can get you set up BEFORE classes begin. We start immediately and any delay will make things harder.

CS22 in the midst of COVID

The course is taught using multiple methods, including:

  • IN PERSON

    • For students on campus, the Digital Arts Lab (Sudikoff 005) should be open (we are still working on the plan for this) and will allow a small number of students to work on iMacs during class, during TA hours, and at certain other times.

      • Students are required to follow Dartmouth’s COVID guidelines, including, but not limited to:

        • Masks are required

        • Distancing required

        • Thorough cleaning of equipment will happen between uses

        • No use if you are not feeling well or if you have traveled or been in contact with someone who is sick (see Dartmouth guidelines)

      • TA’s will be available during some classes and during posted TA Hours

  • REMOTE AND SYNCHRONOUS

    • All classes will be remote in that Lorie will be teaching remotely during class periods (H Block)

    • Students are strongly encouraged to attend classes synchronously as it will improve the quality of your experience and help you get to know other students

  • REMOTE AND ASYNCHRONOUS

    • There has always been an asynchronous aspect to this class. During COVID there are simply more opportunities for asynchronous learning, including:

      • Watching class recordings (available on class Slack channel very soon after class is over)

      • Following Lorie’s online tutorials (on this website)

      • Attending TA Hours to get help with your work or simply work in a group setting (super helpful for motivating you and helping you learn)

      • Lorie’s Office Hours (sign up HERE) are another opportunity to learn outside class and get help with your projects

      • Watching tutorials on LinkedIn Learning

      • Watching tutorials on YouTube (there are lots of these and many are not very good or overly complicated, so beware)

Here is the link for joining the class
